Edison and METRON partner to reduce the energy consumption of Italian industries thanks to AI

Edison and METRON launch Edison Analytics powered by METRON, a digital offering that leverages existing data sources in Italian industries to identify energy optimization opportunities with savings of up to 14% in energy costs.

Milan, June 15th, 2020 - Edison has signed a partnership agreement with METRON, an innovative digital company, to offer industrial customers Edison Analytics powered by METRON: an energy monitoring and optimization solution that uses digitization and artificial intelligence, responding to the ever-increasing needs of Italian companies that are confronted on a daily basis with an ever-changing environment.

Edison Analytics powered by METRON is specifically targeted at industries in Italy that are characterized by significant energy consumption, equal to about 20%* of the country's total energy consumption, and an enormous amount of available data. However, we do not always have the right tools to extract from these data the information needed to reduce the impact, both economic and environmental, of consumption and increase the competitiveness of our company.

The partnership between Edison and METRON provides medium and large Italian industries with the tools needed to gain the necessary awareness of what is consumed and how it is consumed and the know-how needed to define long-term energy strategies, while also promoting the implementation of an energy management system (e.g., ISO 50001 certification).

"This is an innovative solution on the national scene," said Paolo Quaini, Edison's Director of Energy and Environmental Services, "that combines Edison's expertise in managing and optimizing industrial sites with METRON's innovative solutions, finally making it possible to transform energy and operational data into economic and environmental savings. The solution can be applied to all industrial processes in any production sector and is able to predict the future energy needs of a plant, identify new opportunities and solutions to increase efficiency and, if necessary, optimize the management of the individual machines used in the plants. We have tested its great potential in some pilot projects with remarkable results".

Vincent Sciandra, CEO of METRON commented: "Italy was one of the countries most affected by the Covid-19 crisis. However, our new partnership with Edison underlines the emergence of a new and widespread awareness within the Italian industry. This awareness translates into a strong desire to move toward a more sustainable ecosystem. METRON will play a major role in this move, as it aims to bridge the gap between ecology and industry through artificial intelligence. We are therefore fully committed to supporting this initiative".

The Edison Analytics powered by METRON digital platform collects, aggregates and analyzes in real-time any type of data generated by an industrial plant while interacting with data from outside. The solution is able to recreate the plant's digital twin, always updated thanks to a sophisticated model that combines a vast library of industrial technologies and energy sources. On this basis, it is possible to identify new optimization opportunities thanks to the artificial intelligence-based on Machine Learning, i.e. the ability to learn automatically through a series of algorithms that analyze historical data and predict the energy needs of the analyzed plants. Thanks to Edison Analytics powered by METRON, it will be possible to achieve savings of up to 14% of total energy consumption.

Edison is one of the leading players in the energy services market and a leader in the industrial services sector with a solid background of expertise and experience in the management of energy assets: 45 large industrial sites under management, 20 facilities with a low environmental impact and from renewable sources, more than 20 million square meters of plant areas and 800 km of energy carrier distribution networks. Edison combines its in-depth knowledge of the energy market with solid experience in providing services to industry and the service industry.

This agreement is part of the company's digital transformation process undertaken in recent years, also thanks to the establishment of an organizational structure and a dedicated skills base. Digital technology is a true cornerstone of the development strategy that Edison has adopted to address the challenges of a rapidly changing energy market and has an impact both on its internal processes and on the offering of products and services to its customers: households, public administrations and industries.
